Disadvantages of Assertive Discipline

As with most theories, there is no guarantee that using this method will result in positive long-term results for every student. There is no full-proof way of knowing whether the rules created by teachers are healthy, rational, and humanising . Furthermore, there are no studies which prove that students’ desires can be met only when their teacher’s wants are fulfilled. This “cookbook” approach may encourage a lack of individuality in dealing with students. Some students may have a genuine reason for refusing to follow a teacher’s orders, or at least a need to explain. Teachers may become so focused on classroom management, that they fail to hear or see a cry for help. Some constructivist critics claim that this method is in direct opposition to the current teaching methods as it does not show students how to manage their behaviour.
